Reading an amino acid sequence
An amino acid sequence lists residues in their stated order, conventionally from the N terminus toward the C terminus. One-letter and three-letter codes describe the same residue identities when used consistently.
For research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
Preserve punctuation that identifies modifications. Do not strip a terminal suffix or a stereochemical marker to make a sequence look tidier. If a source supplies only a name, record the sequence as unavailable instead of reconstructing it from an unrelated entry.
What to retain in a research record
- Notation system used by the source
- Sequence order and residue count
- Terminal and stereochemical annotations
